The Central Criminal Records Exchange, working in conjunction with the Virginia State Police, has made it possible for employers to conduct criminal background checks in Virginia. All search information will be input via the online portal provided by the Virginia State Police. Once the search information has been supplied online, the requestor will be provided with a downloadable copy of their form which must be printed, notarized (if applicable), and sent by mail to the police department. Note that the requesting individual must obtain the written consent of the subject prior to submitting a background check.

Step 1 – Go to the Virginia State Police Website
The Virginia State Police requires the requestor of a criminal records search to obtain the written consent of the subject (the Background Check Authorization Form may be used for this purpose). Navigate to this webpage and locate the “Criminal History/Background” window. Within the window, select the link which has been highlighted with an arrow in the image below.
Step 2 – Choose Form
This page contains the online form that will be used by the requestor to input their personal information as well as the information of the subject.
Using the drop-down menu located below “Enter New Background Search,” specify the form which is to be used for the criminal background check; Form SP-167 should be used by the general public and private employers while Form SP-230 is meant for registered Virginia agencies (e.g. adult daycare centers, hospital pharmacy employees).
Step 3 – Subject Information
Below “Search Information,” use the “Request Type” drop-down menu to select Criminal History Search. Next, specify the following pieces of information to describe the purpose of the search as well as the subject’s information:
- Specify purpose (if other)
- Last name
- First name
- Middle name (optional)
- Maiden name (optional)
- Date of birth
- SSN (optional)
- Non-profit volunteer (check if applicable)
Step 4 – Mailing Address
Specify the return mailing address by entering the following information in the empty fields:
- Name/agency of requestor
- Address line 1
- Zip code
Step 5 – Contact and Payment Information
In “Contact Information,” you have the option to specify the phone number and email address of the requestor. Just below that, select a payment method by choosing one of the options available in the drop-down menu. Enter into the remaining field a VSP Account Number (if applicable) and click Confirm to proceed.
Step 6 – Review of Submission
The information supplied thus far can be found presented for review on the following page. Ensure that all details have been provided accurately before clicking Generate.
Step 7 – Download Form
The Virginia State Police will now generate a PDF form containing all of the information entered during the online submission process. Click Ok to download the form.
Step 8 – Provide Signature(s)
If submitting Form SP-167, both the requesting individual and the search subject must provide their signatures on the form. Each signature must then be authenticated by a Notary Public. Form SP-230 requires the signature of the requestor only and the form needn’t be notarized.
Step 9 – Submit Form
Lastly, the requestor must pay the processing fee by inputting their credit card information in the available space on the form ($15 per background check). The requestor may alternatively pay the processing fee by attaching a certified check or money order made payable to the Virginia State Police.
