A South Carolina criminal background check may be conducted by any person or organization via the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) website or by submitting a form through the mail. It is common for the documented name and date of birth of the individual to differ from the personal information entered in your search criteria (e.g. if the individual uses an alias or falsifies certain details). In these instances, it may be best to conduct a Fingerprint Search as the results are less likely to be falsely positive or falsely negative.
Cost – $25 ($26 if searching online). Reduced fee of $8 for charitable organizations
Step 1 – Check Online or by Mail
You may conduct a criminal background check either by completing the online form or by submitting the South Carolina Criminal Records Check Form (CJ-022) through the mail. If submitting the form by mail, send the completed form, along with the $25 fee and a self-addressed envelope, to SLED Records Department, PO Box 21398 Columbia SC 29221-1398. Step 2 – Accept Terms
If performing a background check online, navigate to this webpage and scroll down until you’ve found the image displayed below. Select I accept these terms and conditions to proceed.
Step 3 – Eligibility for Reduced Fees
Any authorized charitable organization is eligible to pay a reduced fee of $8 instead of the standard $26. If you are eligible for the reduced fee, you must include with your submission the Charitable Account Application Form and IRS documentation of the organization’s Section 501 (c)(3) status. Specify your eligibility by choosing either Not Eligible or Eligible.
Step 4 – Subject Information
Enter the individual’s personal details in the spaces provided. The requisite information is as follows:
- Last name
- First name
- Date of birth
- Maiden name (optional)
- SSN (optional)
Click the Submit button after the individual’s information has been provided.
Step 5 – Important Details
Read over this information carefully before clicking the small check box (highlighted in yellow below) to agree to the statements.
Proceed by clicking Make Payment.
Step 6 – Cardholder Information
Here you are required to provide your personal information. In the empty spaces, supply the following:
- Company name (optional)
- Alternate address (optional)
- Zip code
- Phone (optional)
- Fax (optional)
- Email (optional)
Select the blue Continue button when you’re ready to proceed.
Step 7 – Make Payment
To pay the fee for the background check, enter your credit card details in the empty spaces (card #, card type, expiration date, name on card, card verification #). Click Continue after your card information has been provided.
Step 8 – Complete Background Check
Now that all of the necessary information has been supplied, navigate through the remaining pages until reaching the results of your query. Results indicating multiple subjects will be noted with a “Special Processing Required” message.
