An individual or company may conduct a criminal background check in Rhode Island if the person is informed prior to the search and gives their consent. It will be possible for the background check to be performed in person or through the mail by submitting the consent form provided on the Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI) website; the form must be signed by a Notary Public. All results will show criminal offences which have occurred in the State of Rhode Island only and not those from out-of-state.
Cost – $5 (additional 2% + 50¢ per credit card transaction).

Step 1 – Complete the Form
Before commencing with the background check, have the applicant complete a Background Check Authorization Form which indicates their consent to having their criminal record researched. Following that, download the BCI Disclaimer Form and fill it in with the following information:
- Applicant’s name
- Applicant’s maiden name
- Applicant’s date of birth
- Applicant’s name
- Individual or company conducting search
Some additional information is required here. In the remaining spaces, the applicant must provide their signature and indicate the location where the document was signed (city and state) as well as the date. Lastly, a Notary Public must provide their signature and specify the date their commission expires.
Step 2 – Submit to BCI
The completed form can be submitted to Bureau of Criminal Identification in person at the following address: Office of Attorney General, 150 South Main Street, Providence, RI 02903. Along with the form, you must bring a valid form of identification (state issued driver’s license, state issued identification card, US passport). Each background check requires a $5 filing fee which you can pay by check, money order, or credit card. Note that payment by credit card requires an additional 2% + 50¢ per credit card transaction.
To submit the form through the mail, you must first attach the following items to the form:
- Copy of a valid form of ID (state issued driver’s license/ID card, passport)
- Check or money order of $5, made payable to BCI
- Self-addressed and stamped envelope
Your complete filing package must be delivered to the following address: Office of Attorney General, 150 South Main Street, Providence, RI 02903. The return of the background check should be received within seven (7) days.
