When conducting Missouri criminal background checks for employment purposes, there are few restrictions. However, there is one law regarding professional licensing; in accordance with §561.016, Missouri residents cannot be denied a professional/occupation license based only on a prior conviction. In other words, an individual’s previous conviction cannot disqualify them from becoming licensed in any profession. As per federal law, employers must receive the employee’s written permission before conducting a full background check using a third-party agency. Furthermore, the employee must be given an opportunity to explain a search result which gives the employer cause to plan on implementing any adverse action.

Cost – $13 per search (plus a processing fee of at least $1.25)

Step 1 – Access the Missouri Automated Criminal History System (MACHS)

Begin the online background check process by accessing the MACHS webpage.

Step 2 – Login

Provide your login information and click Login.

Step 3 – Create a New Account

If you haven’t yet created a MACHS account, you will need to do so before performing a search. Click the New to this Site? link and, on the subsequent page, click Yes – Continue to continue.

Step 4 – Create an Individual Account

If you are creating a personal account, you will have to provide the following information before clicking Submit:

  • Full name
  • Address
  • Phone number
  • E-mail address
  • Password
  • Security question and answer

Step 5 – Create a Business Account

Select the Business Account radio button and supply the following information before clicking the Submit button to create a business account:

  • Business name
  • Address
  • Business type
  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Your phone number
  • Your e-mail address
  • Password
  • Security question and answer

Step 6 –  Perform a Search

Once you have created an account, you will be able to use your e-mail address and password to log into the MACHS search portal to perform a criminal background check. Provide as much information as possible into the search window before clicking Add To Shopping Cart. When you are finished performing criminal history searches, click View Shopping Cart.

Step 7 –  Manage Shopping Cart

Click Submit to pay for your criminal history report.

Step 8 –  Select Payment Method

Select your payment method and click Check Out.

Step 9 –  Provide Billing Information

Provide all of the required billing information before clicking Continue.

Step 10 –  Provide Payment Information

Supply your payment information before clicking Continue.

Step 11 –  Confirm Information

Click Submit to continue.

Step 12 –  View Receipt

You will then be given a receipt for your transaction, along with your “Submission ID.”

Step 13 –  View Search Submission

By accessing the “Purchase History Page,” you can view your search’s status and criminal history report.
