An employer is permitted to perform Michigan criminal background checks on employees and candidates. In accordance with Michigan law, an employer cannot ask employees about misdemeanor arrests that did not lead to a conviction. A criminal background check can be made using the Michigan State Police (MSP) Internet Criminal History Access Tool (ICHAT) for a fee of $10 per result.

Step 1 – Access the ICHAT Website
To perform the search you will need to navigate to the ICHAT login page by following this link.
Step 2 – Log into Your Account
Enter your email address and password into the login window and click Sign In in order to be able to perform a search. If you do not have an account, continue to Step 3. Otherwise, skip ahead to Step 6.
Step 3 – Create an Account
Step 4 – Provide Personal Information
Now, provide the following personal and account information before clicking Save:
- Logon ID
- Security question & answer
- Full name
- Complete address
- Daytime phone number
- Agency code (for government, non-profit, or PS&I firms only)
Step 5 – Activate Account
Step 6 – Perform a Background Search
Step 7 – Enter Search Information
- Full name
- Day of birth
- Year of birth
- Month of birth
- Other names (not required)
- SID (for criminal record numbers)
Once you are ready, click “Submit” to continue.
Step 8 – Select Payment Method
Step 9 – Select Individual Case(s)
Select the case(s) which you wish to view ($10/case) and click Check Out to proceed.
Step 10 – Provide Credit Card Payer Information
Provide all of the necessary credit card payment information before clicking Next.
Step 11 – Make Payment
To make your payment, click Pay Now.
Step 12 – View Responses
Once your payment has been processed, you can click View Responses to view your search result(s) in detail.
