A Kansas criminal background check can be performed by anyone, but this type of search is typically conducted by employers when determining an job applicant’s eligibility. Criminal history information can be used to assess an applicant’s fitness for a particular position or duty as long as the information raises an issue regarding the employee’s trustworthiness, or the safety or well-being of the employees and customers. Furthermore, this information can only be used for hiring purposes if the applicant signs a release or consent form. Criminal records are available to the general public through the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) with a few exceptions (i.e. arrests that have been disposed or arrests occurring over a year ago where a disposition has not been made clear). Criminal background checks can be conducted through a name-based search or fingerprint identification; the latter yielding a much more accurate result.

Cost – $20 (name-based); $35 + potential additional fees (fingerprint-based)
