A criminal background check is the most popular type of report to verify the character of an individual. By law a criminal report may not list any activity of a person for more than seven (7) years unless it is a felony.

Banning the Box – There is a nationwide movement underway to remove the asking of prior criminal convictions on an initial job application when requesting candidates for a position. Therefore, it is recommended that when employers use a job application to request information from an individual that they do not ask questions about their criminal history (See Banning the Box Fact Sheet).

3rd Party Service – Using a 3rd party service will cost around $30 for a basic report from websites like GoodHire or HireRight. The benefits to this is that you will most likely get a detailed nationwide report of the individual.
