Individuals and qualifying employers can perform an Alabama criminal background check through the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA). The Alabama Background Check System is only available to employers who subscribe by going through the qualification process found on the ALEA website. Alabama does not impose any restrictions beyond the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requirements. Employers can only consider the last seven (7) years of an individual’s criminal record unless the annual salary of the desired job is more than $75,000.

Cost – $95 subscription fee per year, $15 fee per check

Laws –  There are no laws restricting employers from conducting a criminal background check.

Step 1 – Background Check Authorization Form

If an employer is performing a background check on an employee or prospective employee, the employee must provide consent using a background check authorization form.

Step 2 – Access the Alabama Background Check System (ABC)

Qualifying employers who have already subscribed to the ABC can log in through this web portal using their username and password, as shown in the image below. Those who have yet to subscribe to the ABC system can do so by going to the ABC subscriber web portal. Subscribers will need to print and sign the subscription agreement. Click Continue proceed.

Step 3 – Enter Company Information

Enter the following company information in the fields provided:

  • Name of company
  • Physical address
  • City
  • State
  • Zip
  • Billing address (if different from physical address)

Click Continue.

Step 4 – Employer Status Verification

Select the applicable boxes that define the employer as well as the employees on whom background checks will be conducted. Next, enter the following information:

  • Number of employees
  • FEI number
  • Entity name
  • Address
  • City
  • State
  • Zip
  • Phone
  • Contact person
  • Entity business

Step 5 – Contact Information

Provide the company contact name, title, full address, phone number, and email.

Step 6 – Authorizing Official

Enter the following information pertaining to the authorizing official:

  • Name
  • Title
  • Address
  • City
  • State
  • Zip
  • Phone number
  • Email
  • Reason for signing up

Step 7 – Customer Admin Account

Enter the customer admin name, username, password, and email address.

Step 8 – Subscriber Agreement

Read the terms and conditions before clicking I Agree. Once payment information is provided on the subsequent page, criminal background checks can be conducted.

Step 9 – Select Payment Option

Select either monthly invoice, credit card, or electronic check as the payment type.

Step 10 – Subscriber Agreement

Once payment has been approved, users must print, sign and mail the Subscriber Registration Agreement and Affidavit Addendum. Alabama Interactive will send out an approval notification and users can begin conducting criminal background checks through the ALEA web portal.
